I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Kerner and his staff. For years I had been feeling like I wasn’t breathing right and would constantly complain about nose pain but every doctor I went to just thought I didn’t like my nose because it had a big bump on it and quickly brushed it off. It started to get worse as I got older with nose bleeds and even trouble sleeping at night because I wasn’t breathing right. After discovering I had a deviated septum I met with Dr. Kerner to discuss my options. I decided on having septoplasty to fix my septum and decided that while I was under I would get the bump on my nose taken off. He was fully supportive of my decision, something all my others doctors had been judgmental about. I was sent to take pictures and work with a nurse to digitally design what I wanted my nose to look like. When I saw my new nose for the first time on that computer screen I cried tears of joy and excitement. I was seeing what I had wanted for a long time.
When the day of my surgery arrived I was very anxious. I made it about 10 minutes in the pre op room before I started to cry. His fabulous staff was so kind to me. They quickly sprung into actions to calm my fears, make some jokes, and make me very comfortable. In addition to my pre op appointment, before my surgery the staff made sure that my fiancé and I had all the appropriate information we’d need for my recovery.
When I woke up from my surgery I was informed that my nose had been broken during surgery, something that wasn’t planned but also wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. It turns out that my nose had been previously broken, which would account for some of the nasal pain and the bump on my nose. It had been a bad and old break; I assume it was caused by catching a football with my face when I was younger. There was so much scare tissue that Dr. Kerner had to break it again to fix it. Besides feeling a little nauseous from the anesthesia, which I was quickly given medicine for as soon as I complained about it, I was shocked by how okay I felt post-surgery. After a nice period of time in recovery, I was sent on my merry way home with my fiancé and all my instructions and medicine. I was checked on a few times by the staff once I got home, which was very comforting.
My recovery process was quite painless, uncomfortable was the worst I felt, but that’s to be expected when you are unable to breathe through your nose for 10 days. My nose was so well packed and taped that I didn’t feel any pain from my nose. I was also surprised by my lack of swelling and bruising. At my pre op appointment I had been given something to take before and after my surgery for swelling and bruising and it really worked well.
The day I went in to get my bandages off and my splints out of my nose was a wonderful day. As soon as the splints came out I was so surprised by how well I was able to breathe. I had no idea how bad septum had been till I was able to breathe normally. When my bandages came off I was beyond thrilled. My nose was beautiful, it still is beautiful. Dr. Kerner did a great job. Whenever I tell people about my surgery they are always so shocked that my nose looks so “normal” and not like most that undergo nasal surgery. I have referred many people to Dr. Kerner simply because his work speaks for itself. I am so grateful to Dr. Kerner and his staff for taking such good care of me and for giving me such a beautiful and good working nose.
